Networking is …

Anyone that has heard me talk about the business of photography has heard me say it is 80% marketing and 20% photography. Networking is an important element in reaching out to potential clients and making them aware of your work. The majority of photographers I talk with do not particularly like this part of the business but attending networking events is indeed necessary.

A Life Documented in Polariods

What started as a personal project, quickly became an obsession for New York photographer Jamie Livingston (above), who managed to take a Polaroid picture every day for 18 years.

His last, 6,000 shots later, on October 25, 1997 – his birthday was of Livingston on his deathbed, dying from cancer.

Blog with details on John Livingston’s life and photography.

Today the greatest question was decided …

Yesterday the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in America; and a greater perhaps never was, nor will be, decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony, ”that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.”

John Adams (1735-1826) Second President of the USA.

On Location from Another Photographers Perspective

Currie FitzHugh is a Wedding and Portrait photographer and friend who joined me a while back when I did an editorial shoot. I am always open to have another photographer join me on a shoot as long as the client doesn’t mind so it was great to have her join me. I was also thrilled that she was willing to shoot some behind the scenes photos because most of the time I never get images of myself at work.

Lee Love - Behind the Scenes

We are shooting in the median of a busy highway to show that Nathan’s office was any where around town.

It was also interesting to get Currie’s perspective on the work I do compared to her work. Obvious we have very different styles and clients which means we can always learn something new from each other.

Check out her blog post for the complete story and more images behind the scenes on this assignment. Of course also check out Curries work and if you know of a couple looking for a wedding photographer please send them her way.

On Campus: Behind the Scenes of Editorial Photo Shoot

A couple of weeks ago I had a magazine assignment for a story about dating on campus. As usual you are never quite sure what you will be faced with as far as subjects and location. But for this story the focus was a guy and a girl so I knew a head of time who I would be working with. When contacting them to setup times for session I had the presence of mind to ask them to each bring along a couple of friends who would not mind be in the photos. My thinking was if they had some they knew that they could be interacting with this would allow them to be more relaxed and I would have a better chance of capturing images that were less posed.

CAPTCHA: What the &*%$# is Wrong with the Computer Industry ?

What kind of industry would create and use a technology that drives its customers away ? Is anyone else getting increasingly more annoyed at the use of web sites that insist on using these insane awful CAPTCHA forms ? And is it just me are these getting harder and harder to read ?

Skateboarding on the Shadows: Glimpse into a Long Term Photography Project

For the past year I have been working on a project to document local skateboarders. I was introduced to the sport while working on another project and found their passion and dedication inspiring.

In order to do the topic justice I try to visit the park once a week and get to know some of the skateboarders and ask questions about the moves and names of the tricks they perform. As with most of my projects it is about the people so the more I can connect with them the better my ability to capture something real.
